A Journey in Healing and Leadership
I am Professor Ikpeme Asanye Ikepme, and my life's journey has been one deeply intertwined with the pursuit of healing, leadership, and the relentless commitment to excellence in healthcare. Born on the 1st of February, 1966, in the serene town of Eniong Abatim, Odukpani local government area of Cross River State, Nigeria, my story is one of passion, perseverance, and a profound love for the medical profession.
My educational voyage commenced at the Cross River State School of Basic Studies, Akamkpa, where I laid the foundation for my academic pursuits. Later, at the Government Secondary School, Ikom, I honed my intellect, graduating in 1986 with a solid educational background that would pave the way for my future endeavors.
The corridors of the School of Medicine, College of Medical Sciences, University of Benin, Benin-city, welcomed me next. In 1991, I proudly earned my Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, marking the beginning of my formal journey into the realm of medicine. Armed with a thirst for knowledge and an unyielding dedication to my craft, I pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Management, a testament to my commitment to not only clinical excellence but also effective healthcare administration.
From 1995 to 2000, I immersed myself in a rigorous Postgraduate Residency Training at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, solidifying my expertise in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery. In 2001, the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, became my training ground, culminating in the successful completion of the Residency Part II Fellowship Examination in Orthopaedics in 2002. The accolades of a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) and the International College of Surgeons (FICS) followed, attesting to my commitment to surgical excellence on both local and international fronts.
Returning to the University of Calabar, I assumed the role of a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, a position that allowed me to meld my cross-disciplinary training in clinical medicine and management. The mantle of leadership was not unfamiliar, as my career path saw me ascend to the prestigious role of Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.
My tenure as the HOD was marked by unwavering dedication to my work, a zero-tolerance policy for indiscipline, and a commitment to excellence that extended beyond the operating room. I became known not only for my surgical skills but also for my generosity, having donated personal equipment to enhance the performance of official functions.
In 2019, I proudly accepted the mantle of Chief Medical Director of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, an appointment that represents the culmination of years of hard work, sacrifice, and a passion for advancing healthcare. My leadership philosophy is rooted in committed governance, effective management, and a genuine concern for the well-being of both patients and medical professionals.
Beyond the operating theater, I am blessed with a fulfilling family life. Married with three children, I draw strength and inspiration from the love and support of my family.
As I continue my journey in the service of humanity, my autobiography stands as a testament to the values that guide my path – a commitment to healing, a dedication to leadership, and an enduring passion for making a positive impact on the world of medicine.
