The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital Obstetrics and Gynaecology department was the first and most comprehensive center of its kind in the southern region of Nigeria; it started as the famed St Margret Hospital’s Maternity annex in 1895 and continued as the maternity annex of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital when the teaching hospital came into existence.
Until, 2014, this maternity annex of the teaching hospital was situated at Moore Road, Calabar, but has since been relocated to join other departments at the permanent site of the hospital. All through its existence, the department has committed itself to ensuring that it is always on target on its special mandates. These include:
1. Providing specialist care for its clients
2. Providing a continuous stream of intellectually sound, appropriately skilled manpower through medical education at the Part III MBBS level, residency training, and optimal clinical exposure for nurse midwives and community health workers who pass through her.
3. Leadership on research on women’s health: There continues to be a large body of original research in international and national peer-reviewed journals of repute emanating from the specialists and the trainees here. Many of our specialists are also reviewers for several reputable international and local .journals
4. Interfacing with communities to carry out much-needed preventive and therapeutic interventions on women’s health.
The department stands on four pillars: Empathy, Efficiency, Effectiveness, and Safety. Numerous women have been beneficiaries of our basic and specialist obstetric and gynaecological care. Many neonates have uttered their first cry within the walls of our delivery suites. The specialists in our center have a personal in-depth understanding of women’s health issues and work one-on-one in partnership with clients to offer evidence-based individualized care, always with the safety of the patient in mind. We pride ourselves on our commitment to clients; our teamwork; the aesthetically pleasing, healing environment of our department’s facilities, and our smooth linkages with other departments within and without, all of which ensure that every client who comes to us receives timely, wholesome care. Our wholesome care does not only attend to the specific health challenge but transcends to benefit the individual woman as a whole: mind, body, and spirit. It is this approach to patient care that we have continued to impart to our trainees. It is this approach that has ensured that our resident doctors have made some of the memorable moments at the Postgraduate Medical Colleges by awards won.
