Dr. Mbang Kooffreh-Ada, is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Chief Consultant Gastroenterologist at the University of Calabar/University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Nigeria, with over 20 years of experience in clinical care, research, medical education, and mentorship. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Calabar in 2002, completed postgraduate training at UCTH, and was awarded the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Gastroenterology and Hepatology (FMCP) in 2015. She also holds a PhD in Clinical Sciences (Gastroenterology).
Her clinical and academic interests include viral hepatitis, chronic liver disease and liver cancer, Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Helicobacter pylori, and Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, with a particular interest in advancing evidence-based care in resource-limited settings.
Dr. Kooffreh-Ada has served in several leadership capacities, including being the current Head of Internal Medicine and Head of Gastroenterology & Endoscopy at UCTH/University of Calabar. She is actively involved in professional medical organisations, research collaborations, community health initiatives, and advocacy, particularly in viral hepatitis and liver health.
Her research has contributed to the growing body of evidence on gastrointestinal and liver diseases in African populations, with publications in international peer-reviewed journals, including The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology. She has supervised postgraduate research, including award-winning PhD work, and participates in national and international collaborative studies addressing liver cancer, dietary mycotoxins, and biomarkers of chronic liver disease. She has received several awards for professional and academic excellence.
