About the school

A foremost training and research institution

Welcome to the School of Medical Laboratory Science in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar — Cross River State, Nigeria. Established in 1979, SMLS is one of UCTH's foremost training and research institutions.

Today it serves as the Regional Centre for Professional Postgraduate Fellowship Research & Training of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, covering Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers and Cross River States — with strong patronage from postgraduate students across Anglophone Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

The School maintains a standard research and training laboratory, staffed by qualified, certified personnel, and holds technical partnerships with international donor agencies and NGOs to run specialised workshops and seminars in laboratory medicine and routine laboratory practice.

SVC / 01

Postgraduate fellowship research

Trains researchers and conducts research for Post Graduate Special Fellows of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).

SVC / 02

Academic research facilitation

Facilitates Medical Laboratory Science research for M.Sc and Ph.D students, physicians, and pathological and academic researchers — including personnel from the Nigerian Armed Forces.

SVC / 03

Workshops & seminars

Regularly organises special training workshops and seminars in laboratory medicine and routine laboratory practice and services.

SVC / 04

Research referrals

Records and handles complex Medical Laboratory Science research referrals from several institutions across Nigeria.

International collaboration

Collaborates with international organisations, meeting research and training needs in medical diagnostic services for a range of clients.
