THE BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL.
The School of Nursing of University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) started nursing training in April, 1979. Students were admitted and jointly trained with the students admitted by the Cross River State Ministry of Health in school of Nursing, St. Margaret Hospital Calabar, located in the premise of the college of Health Technology along Mary Slessor Avenue. However, in November, 2009, School of Nursing of University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) was fully accredited.
The school has three well-equipped class rooms, tutorial room, well-equipped demonstration room, computer room, a science laboratory with reagents, an equipment store and a library. The school also has hostel accommodation with capacity to accommodate over 200 students. The hostel has a reading room, a kitchenette, a cafeteria, a common room, sick bay and laundry.
MISSION OF THE SCHOOL
To transform the student nurse into a professionally functional nurse, competent in providing qualitative nursing care globally, based on acquired knowledge, skills, attitudes and ethics. The school provides high quality, student-centred learning environment that promotes research, clinical practice and community services using the Nursing process approach.
To build a centre of excellence in truth and indeed that will prepare excellent and functional nurses competent to deliver qualitative nursing care in any part of the world.
THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAMME
1. To produce nurses that can harness their cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains to function
effectively within the nursing profession anywhere, any day.
2. To teach the student nurses professional skills based on the holistic view of man.
3. To produce nurses who are dynamic, sympathetic, empathetic and versatile enough to cope with the
challenges in the profession.
4. To produce nurses who can apply knowledge of biological, physical and behavioural sciences in
assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care (concepts of nursing
5. To develop awareness for ‘research in nursing’ among the student nurses and provide the
foundation for the actualization of this concept, through supervised research projects.
6. To produce nurses who will display positive attitude in patients/clients/community care, amongst
other health team members.
Admission into the school is by entrance examination: Written and Interview. Male and female are eligible to take the entrance examination, which is organized by the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. The Candidates must have had full Secondary School Education and possess Senior Secondary Certificate or its equivalent with five (5) ‘credits’ at no more than two sittings. These credits must be in the following subject: Mathematics, English language, Biology or Health Science and any other two subjects. The possession of a Diploma in Community Health from an accredited college/school of Health Technology or Certificate in Community Health Extension may be considered for those who do not possess the requisite 5 credits.
The forms for the Entrance Examination into the school are sold every year from April to June. The entrance takes place in July, while the interview is usually scheduled for August. Final selection is based on the results of these examinations; and successful candidates are expected to resume training in the school in October, first week.
These candidates must give written consent for admission offer by completing and signing of the acceptance form, within two weeks of the release of the interview results. The offer lapses after this two weeks, and the chance (vacancy) given to candidates on the waiting list.
The admitted candidates are also expected, upon resumption, to submit all their credentials including valid license with four recent passport size photographs. They are also expected to pay for their verification with the appropriate examination bodies which is done by the school.
